What Do You Desire?

When asked this question, most people would likely respond with: wealth, success, attractiveness, the latest gadgets, getting married—or even getting divorced! But what about becoming more intelligent, more loving, more compassionate? What about inner peace? Why aren’t these often on the list of desires?

Desire is the foundation of manifestation—it shapes our thoughts, actions, and reality. Not only do our actions create karma, but even the very thought of desire ripples outward into the fabric of existence. You are what you think, and your perception of the world is a projection of your own experience. Scientists refer to this concept as quanta, while in Yoga, it is called Dharma (distinct from Sanatana Dharma, the eternal order of the universe). Negative and selfish thoughts—those that seek to harm others—lead to suffering, just as the wheels of a cart follow the ox that pulls it. Meanwhile, pure and selfless thoughts that aim for harmony and the betterment of all bring joy, like a shadow that never leaves your side.

Consider two people visiting a new country. One is selfish and bitter; the other, happy and generous. Upon their return, the happy traveler describes the people they met as kind and welcoming. In contrast, the bitter traveler believes the country is full of deceitful and jealous individuals. They visited the same place, yet their experiences couldn’t be more different—shaped entirely by their own nature and perspective.

Yoga is a doorway—you will find what you seek. If you knock with a desire for misery, you will find it in abundance. But if your vision is to grow and be free from suffering, then liberation awaits on the other side.
